Our thoughts, movements, decision making etc are controlled by an important organ inside us and this is called the brain. Every year 22nd of July is observed as World Brain Day is well known to us.
The bitter truth is that there are certain conditions that could damage our brain functions. This would further affect the quality of our lives.
Traumatic brain injury or TBI:
Brain would move rapidly back and forth inside the skull when the head suffers from severe blow or injury etc. This would make the brain hit against the hard skull. As a result of this, the brain would get bruised and nerves could get damaged. From mild concussion to severe coma or death etc, TBI could lead to brain function issues. Later on, there are chances to get affected by neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson`s disease or Alzheimer`s disease etc.
Stroke:
Blockage or bleeding in the brain could lead to stroke where there is a disruption in the flow of blood. There are chances of permanent brain damage when brain cells do not get oxygen rich blood. Please take care.
Alzheimer`s disease or AD:
In some persons, a progressive brain disorder can result in loss of memory or confusion or changes in the behaviour etc. This is Alzheimer`s disease or AD. Millions of people across the world have been affected by dementia and AD is one important reason for dementia. It is believed that a combination of factors like genetics, lifestyle and environmental factors etc could lead to AD.
Epilepsy:
In some persons, seizures could occur repeatedly and this is epilepsy or neurological disorder. It must be noted that abnormal electrical activity of the brain could be the reason for seizures. This could lead to sudden changes in behaviour, sensations etc. When left untreated, seizures could lead to permanent brain damage. So, please take care.
Brain tumours:
Abnormal growth of cells in the brain could lead to brain tumours in us. The brain tumour could interfere with the brain functions. Those with brain tumours could show symptoms like headaches, seizures, difficulty with speech and movement etc. When left untreated, brain tumour could lead to permanent brain damage.
